Brent Shirey
AWT2010, AWT2008, AWT2011
Brent Shirey Artist Profile

Brent Shirey is the singer-songwriter for Grand Rapids-based band, Valentiger. His affinity for classic and ageless tunes brings music that leans on time-tested melodies of the 60s, while also drawing from contemporary ideals and experiences. The energy of both old and new provides for albums rich in texture and warmth, and a live show that moves effortlessly from airy rock and roll to harmony rich folk-rock to subdued alt-country. All, of course, achieved with additional members Eric Kehoe (bass) and Scott Rider (drums).

The band has earned their reputation as a seasoned touring act, taking Shirey's songs to the road through ten independently booked and financed tours spanning the entire Eastern United States and Canada (CT, IL, IN, KS, TN, MA, MO, MS, NJ, NY, PA, RI, TN, TX, VT, D.C., London, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto). Highlights of the travels include the famed CBGB's, Knitting Factory, Sin e' and Boston's Middle East Club among many others. This decidedly grass-roots style of promotion and distribution has helped to define a dedication to Shirey's overt style of songwriting.

The band is currently recording the follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed “Power Lines To Electric Times.”  It’s release is set for March 2011, coinciding with a showcase at South By Southwest in Austin, TX in association with Flying Dog Brewery.  The album is yet again born from a completely independent process, as the band records from their personal studio while distributing without label support.

Rachel Zylstra
AWT2008, AWT2003, AWT2002
Rachel Zylstra Artist Profile

Rachel Zylstra grew up in rural small towns, taking piano lessons and joyfully singing unsolicited songs at the dinner table. After spending a half a dozen years in Grand Rapids, getting a theatre degree and jumping into the West Michigan songwriter scene, she leapt once again - to New York.

Refining her craft over time, she has been an artist in residency at the famed "home of anti-folk," The Sidewalk Café, released a 2005 album, Most of It Is True, and collaborated with some of her own musical inspirations, including a 2006 double-bill with Jason Harrod, and opening for Over the Rhine and David Bazan last year.

With clever chordal turns and a voice that is equal parts world-weary chanteuse and love-struck girl, Rachel tells stories of wit, learning, hope and heartache. On December 3rd she releases her newest album, Before You Could Decide.
